Sail the ARC with First Class Sailing

From 19th November 2017 until 31st January 2018

MDL Shamrock Quay Tenants, First Class Sailing, are gearing up to embark on an Atlantic Ocean triangle adventure later this year and there are some spaces with special rates for MDL members.

In October, on a commodious 72ft Challenger Yacht they will sail from the Solent, across the Bay of Biscay and down to the Canary Islands.

In Gran Canaria the boat will join up with the ARC event in November and race, in ‘rally style’, across the pond to St Lucia in the Caribbean.  For those that do the ARC there is then the option to help ‘deliver’ (perhaps via one or two other Caribbean Islands) the boat to Antigua.

Then in early January the boat will cast off to sail back across the Atlantic to the Solent with a possible stop off at the Azores.

Each leg of the trip has its own character and challenges. Sailing across the Bay of Biscay in October/November can be rough.  It can also be quite benign.  Either way once across temperatures will soon start to rise as the boat makes her passage South to Gran Canaria.  It is possible the boat will stop in Cascais in Portugal on the way.

The start of the ARC is on the 19th November and will see around 200 yachts all set off for the 2,700 nautical mile passage to St Lucia.  There may be a few days off heading South to find the trade winds but once in them it will be blissful downwind sailing on the big blue Atlantic Ocean with it’s drawn out swell, flying fish and fantastic sunsets.  There is a chance to really hone one’s sail trim and helming to beat all the other boats and especially the other Challenger 72s in the fleet.  There will of course be time to bake bread and catch the odd fish.  The crossing will take around 14 days.

The voyage back across the Atlantic will start off by joining the boat in Antigua on 4th January and is expected to take around 35 days.  This one is not for the faint hearted. Hugely rewarding, it provides an opportunity to experience some testing ocean sailing. There is a training weekend on 9/10 December out of Portsmouth in the UK.

The Challenger 72 yacht was built for ocean sailing.  She was built to race around the world – a feat it has accomplished twice.   However, she is far from being a stripped out racing machine.  You get your own comfy bunk, and there is a spacious galley and saloon area.  There are two heads, each with a shower.  There is also a water maker on board.  You will not be asked to cut your toothbrush in half to save on weight.

The price of first leg from the Solent to Gran Canaria is £1,042.

The price of the ARC is £3,709

The price of the return across the Atlantic included the training weekend is £1,575.

First Class Sailing are offering MDL members 10% off these prices.
